saving private ryan is the best one in my opinion. I think its the first war movie i've seen with camera-men running along the soldiers making you feel you're really INSIDE the war, and you feel terrible for every soldier getting killed 'in front of you'.

I remember a friend saying next to me (who's afraid of Chucky btw) "**** , this movie kind of ***** " only because he didn't like the people getting killed on screen. Now thats EMOTION!

    hurray.

    Cool

Lawrence of Arabia is a great movie. It's my favorite. But to me it just does not come across as a war movie. It's more about Lawrence's neuroses and his desire to assimilate into the arab culture.

A Bridge Too Far is a mediocre history lesson and a mediocre movie. What can you do with the story of one of the allies greatest defeats told from the allied POV? Sean Connery was great in it but that's about it. I've seen documentaries on the History Channel about these events that were more interesting and entertaining than this movie. Just my two cents.

As war takes everyone to the extremes of the human condition it is an excellent environment for the storyteller since the beginning of time.

So if you want one to check out that has just appeared on DVD, at least in the UK, try the 'War Game'

schindler's list, tho as brilliant as it is, even tho it is set during the war, is not a war film.
a war film tho, doesnt have to be just combat. ah just watch band of brothers, it is one of the best things ever made..

I would also reccomend "Gettysburg". No females, no love interests its simply a movie about the battle of Gettysburg. Jeff Daniels really does some fine work in this movie.

    However here are some drawbacks:
-Get it on DVD and FFwd through the sermons. There are these huge soliloquies that are really nap inducing.
    -6 hours running time.

Watch the Battle of Little Round Top. A good war scene that is well directed. Watch the fatigue on the participants as the battle wears on and the speed at which they move...some good stuff for directors.

    Later,
    Paul

BTW, don't waste your time on that racist piece of trash "Gods and Generals" the supposed prequel to this movie. The absolute worst movie I have seen in a long time.

Oh forgot to add "The Lost Battalion". You can probably find this on Amazon.com. A made for TV gem that is "Saving Private Ryan" in a WW1 setting.

    Later,

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Sad but true. I was really looking forward to this film. Really disappointing.

The video came out today. If I were bored and had a lot of time on my hands I'd buy a copy, save it to my hard drive and re-edit it. I think that buried in all this footage there's a good movie. Not a great movie, just a good one.

But I don't have the time for such a thankless project.
